Four cattle from three herder families died on July 18 in the Mukhar Turuu area of Bayan-Uul bagh, Battsengel soum, Arkhangai province. One more cow died four days later in the same place. Local veterinary officials confirmed on July 24 that those cattle died from anthrax, a highly infectious animal disease that can be transmitted to people.

Despite the fact that anthrax reports were confirmed, a regional-level Naadam of Khangai Hurd – 2006, will take place as scheduled on July 29-30. The government has already planned MNT14.85 million for the naadam of especially horseracing, for which over 3,000 horses from 11 aimags are expected to participate.

On July 25, Soum governor J. Khurelsukh declared a 14-day state of quarantine at the focal point Mukhar Turuu area, which is located 43 kilometers away from the Naadam festival site in Toglohiin Tal valley. 76 people of 23 herder families and 6,596 heads of livestock, which were blocked in the quarantine, have been vaccinated. No more additional cases have been reported.

A working group of 12 people are operating four different temporary check-ins and disinfection points in the areas of Taijiin Khavarjaa, Khurliin Denk, Tsogtuugiin Bulan, and Tsagaan Ereg.
